The government has initiated wheat procurement from Punjab’s Rajpura grain market, marking the beginning of the Rabi season’s procurement drive. The initiative, led by Union Minister for Food and Public Distribution, aims to ensure fair prices for farmers while strengthening food security. Rajpura, a key agricultural hub, witnessed an influx of farmers bringing in their produce, with government agencies ensuring smooth procurement under the Minimum Support Price (MSP) framework.

Punjab, being a major contributor to India’s food grain reserves, plays a crucial role in wheat procurement. Officials have assured farmers that prompt payments and efficient logistics will be maintained. Digital payment systems have also been introduced to reduce delays and improve transparency in transactions.

The procurement drive is expected to stabilize wheat prices and ensure sufficient buffer stocks for the Public Distribution System (PDS). Given the fluctuating global wheat supply due to geopolitical uncertainties, India’s robust procurement process strengthens domestic food security. Experts note that continued government support for farmers, along with investments in storage and logistics, will be crucial in sustaining agricultural productivity and resilience in the long run.

Bangladesh is actively developing its maritime infrastructure to enhance trade and economic opportunities. The country’s ports, including Chattogram, Mongla, and Payra, play a crucial role in South Asian trade, but strategic investments are required to maximize their potential.

One of the most promising projects is the Matarbari deep-sea port, developed with support from Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Matarbari is expected to become Bangladesh’s premier port due

to its natural depth, which can accommodate large container vessels. The project aligns with Bangladesh’s ambition to become a regional logistics hub.

Conversely, Payra Port faces significant challenges, primarily due to sedimentation, requiring costly and continuous dredging operations. This has raised concerns about its long-term viability. Meanwhile, Sonadia Port, another proposed deep-sea port, was shelved due to geopolitical concerns, particularly objections from India regarding Chinese involvement.
